Not if you were the last dandy on earth!

Lars and I watched DIG last night. I've never been a huge fan of either the Dandy Warhols or the Brian Jonestown Massacre, but... the film is hilarious and sad and the soundtrack kicks fucking ass. I don't really want to buy every album, but I really think someone should make me a really awesome comp. cd of both bands.
Do you have to be crazy to be a great artist? Discuss.

why isn't Joel Gion a huge star? Yea, he doesn't really have a whole lot of musical talent, but he is full of charm and cuddly cuteness.

I have all of the Dandy Warhols' stuff (& can probably find the BJM stuff, too). Let me know where I can send it.

In answer to your question about insanity and artistry:
No, you don't have to be completely insane to be an excellent artist. A number of excellent artists are just mild-mannered folk who see the world a bit askew and are able to translate that through an artistic medium. However, we are a culture that loves spectacle, so the Basquiats and the drummers who choke on their own vomit @ the age of 23 will always be hyped and remembered.
I think the artists that I know who are really amazing simply gave themselves over to being different, rather than continuing to fight their nature to try to fit into a prescribed set of societal rules of engagement. Just a thought though.

Joel Gion is my new favorite person. He's really funny and bizarre. I want his face on my money.
